Thank you, Elena (the author, not the noper), for designing this beautiful puzzle as a tribute to your family and its history. More on this when I shake a migraine and get the spoiler written.

This is a beautiful, heart-warming crossword. Thank you, Elena. I now see the world differently thanks to you! Elena says, “It is not easy to talk about the war of 1941-45. This is part of the life of my parents, relatives. Four of my uncles and two aunts, two grandfathers, [died in it]. My mother survived the bombing of Hitler's aviation at the beginning of the war.“

Cont'd DEPOPULATION STRATEGY: “[Hitler considered the populations of the countries east of Poland to be, like the Jews, subhuman. His intent was to annihilate their populations] to provide extra living space for the Aryan race. [His troops murdered all communists, leaders—anyone who might resist]. Villages and homes were torched.

STARVING TO FEED GERMAN HORSES: “No German army could move faster than its horses could pull its equipment behind it. During the invasion of the nations of northwest Europe, feed was [supplied by] Germany, [but not in] the USSR. There were more than 750,000 horses in the attacking force in June of 1941 and they required 16,350 tons of feed per day. …granaries were emptied and horses stolen. The mass starvation of [USSR civilians] in the coming winter was attributable, in fair measure, to the empty grain bins.”

Elena and Sheryl's additional personal comments: Elena: “It is impossible to remember only the trenches of Stalingrad, but forget Pearl Harbor. Or to talk about the heroic landing in Normandy, but forget the besieged Leningrad. The war was one for all.”

Sheryl: True. But Anglo-American forces at Normandy faced 67,000 Germans while the Soviets were fighting 390,000 Germans in Stalingrad alone. Imagine the eastern front in the U.S.: it would have stretched from New York City to Atlanta, winding north to Baltimore and east to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Imagine Chicago under bitter siege and constant shelling for 900 days (Leningrad) while at the same time in Cincinnati (Stalingrad) not a single structure was left habitable. For the first time I understand the Cold War and why the USSR said “Never again.”
