Graveyard23 January 2023, 1:33Stone cold sober, honor students with the most wholesome intentions perfectly appropriate for their field of study, terrorizing someone in their own yard for zero reason. I feel bad that I never went back to apologize!
Graveyard23 January 2023, 1:31Long-ago story.
In college, some anthropology students met at the house of one of our professors for a party. Professor told us about a nearby graveyard out in the country that was fun to explore at night. On the way home, my friend and I decided to find it. Soon we saw a driveway flanked with stone pillars and knew it was the place. But my friend was scared, so we went back home.
Months later, my friend and I were at my house when two of my male friends showed up. We decided to go to the graveyard, as my friend felt safer with two men with us. So we drove out, found the place, and got out of our car. We were walking around, talking loudly, absentmindedly looking for headstones. Then it occurred to all of us, at the same time, that there were no headstones. Suddenly a light came on in a nearby building, and we heard a voice yelling at us. "Who's out there? I'm getting my gun!" We jumped into the car and drove away. Turns out it wasn't the graveyard...it was someone's home.

Snowman8 January 2023, 1:31Interesting, most days I do a couple of the puzzles that come up in the random puzzle section on the sidebar. I had TWO other puzzles of this subject come up right after I did this one. The universe is telling me to stock up on hats and gloves.
Spikes3 January 2023, 10:38I thought it was a totem pole, abstract dancers, or wheat. The title makes it sound a lot more sinister!
Grasshopper3 January 2023, 10:07I was intently concentrating on the gray, just seeing the gray and not what was in between it. Then about half way through the puzzle I got up for a moment, and when I glanced back at the computer from across the room...WOW! It was so clear! Great job.
Patisson3 January 2023, 9:40I thought it was a green heirloom tomato.
Pied Piper3 January 2023, 4:46There is a tour you can take in Germany that follows the origins of fairy tales. This story is among them--you can visit the church in Hameln (AKA Hamelin) where the stained glass window originally stood. The tour goes into many towns associated with events or lore that eventually became the basis for the Grimm brothers' fairy tales. I'd love to take the tour some day!
Pied Piper2 January 2023, 1:45Only recently I was reading up on the origins of this story, which is based on the wording on a stained glass window from the 1300s, to note the 100-year anniversary of the date 130 children were taken or stolen from the village. No one knows exactly what happened to the children, but theories abound. It might have been a reference to a disease epidemic like the plague which may have taken the "children" (AKA the citizens of the village) away, where the piper represented Death. Or it might have been as simple as a mass emigration. Some think it may have been some sort of pagan cult leader who kidnapped the children into the mountains for nefarious purposes. I find the entire topic fascinating.

Woman on Sunday Afternoon -- Seurat30 December 2022, 1:26Nice! Might this have worked better in color, though?
Whale26 December 2022, 3:17I happened on this one today in the random puzzles, and noticed my comment above about it being really hard to start. I tried it again, and I have no idea why I was having trouble the first time. Several large blocks appeared right away, and it was just a matter of logic after that. How odd that I somehow couldn't get those large blocks the first time I did it back in September!
Candle25 December 2022, 3:51Coincidentally, I JUST got finished making a batch of these with my son, filled with small gemstones and pretty stone items, to be used as gifts and to sell at local festivals!
Hamsa25 December 2022, 3:28Lovely.
American Gothic25 December 2022, 0:00Oh my goodness! I started out at the bottom, thinking this was going to either be Santa or some Magi situation. At some point I realized what was unfolding before me, and I was delighted! This was easy but still involved a lot of thought. It's nice to see a larger puzzle from you, and you absolutely nailed it.

Cinderella18 December 2022, 5:26The funniest part of this isn't that the slippers look like Luka's boots (is he her fairy godfather?), but that the one on the step actually, in its rudimentary, pixelated way, looks like it could be clear glass!
Miller's Daughter in Rumplestiltskin17 December 2022, 1:15"Tonight my cakes I bake.
Tonight my beer I make.

The Queen's little baby I take!"
The Princess and the Pea16 December 2022, 6:25I am convinced that this tale came about because of sheet pilling. NO ONE can sleep on that.

Little Match Girl11 December 2022, 7:04Very interesting. I was talking with my kids yesterday about the origins of fairy tales, and how a lot of them were originally very dark. I have a very old book of Andersen's fairy tales, which I got out, dusted off, and looked through. One of the stories I read yesterday was the one that is the title of this puzzle. MINDSCRUB IS SCRUBBING MY MIND!!!
Wolf11 December 2022, 2:44I've solved close to 6000 puzzles at this point, and this is in my top ten favorites. So simple and effective.
Strong man10 December 2022, 10:31I like this. I thought it was going to be a teddy bear or some other cartoony animal with round ears. So I was pleasantly surpised that it was nothing like that!
Watermelon9 December 2022, 4:05I did the red/black last. Before that was in, I was convinced it was Snoopy as the WWI Flying Ace. Hard to believe, I know, but try solving the greens and gray first and you'll see what I mean!
Mouse with cheese7 December 2022, 21:47A bit TOO easy; no opportunity to think and use logic, because everything fell into place. I thought it was a horrible distressed face for a while! Didn't see what was on top of it until after I read the title!
