Torch of freedom28 March 2017, 10:22Great image, and terrific use of shadows. It was worth the hassle of doing a puzzle so tall on my laptop screen. :)
Chess elephant28 March 2017, 9:03There's an elephant gambit that I suspect the title is in reference to. It's a well crafted image.
Railway platform28 March 2017, 7:22Terrific detail.
Donkey28 March 2017, 6:48The lowest-rent Eeyore I've ever seen.
Lamb28 March 2017, 6:14It certainly doesn't look like a full-sized sheep, but I'm pretty sure lambs don't have horns - especially ones as big as its head.
Taxi27 March 2017, 12:33I think the stuff 'above' is supposed to be a cityscape. But what I want to know is what is with that huge spoiler on the cab?
At the computer27 March 2017, 12:14I almost wonder if its supposed to be more a microfiche machine than even an older computer, because if not that appears to be one very deep CRT.
Box of floppy disks27 March 2017, 10:45I actually still have one of these cases in the back of my closet.
Burning match25 March 2017, 9:06I don't disagree with the intended title, but it immediately made me think of the opening credits from the Mission: Impossible series.
Mortar and pestle24 March 2017, 18:41Definitely stylized like a the pharmacist's icon version. Though I think these days, when most people think of a mortar and pestle we picture the bowl shaped mortar rather than cup shaped.
Girl24 March 2017, 18:35That is A LOT of hair and a strangely long and straight neck. Also needs a break between the nose and the hairline because her left eye disappears and she looks slightly Elephant-manesque.
Love23 March 2017, 13:25It's actually a pretty unique and interesting image - nice job on making the eyes kind of unique.
Castle of horrors23 March 2017, 11:17Actually thought it was a coral reef until I looked at the title.
The invisible man23 March 2017, 9:50Very well done. My brain tends to zone in and not see the image before I'm done half the time, and as soon as I finished this I could see precisely what it was - and that it was pretty amusing. :)
Newspaper22 March 2017, 17:38I think any image that does such a good job conveying what it is, without a title to describe it, should get at least a 3. After all in our drop-downs 3s would be Usual and Normal.

And we all know there are images on this site that fail to convey what they are, even WITH a title.
Armchair22 March 2017, 17:27For some reason it reminds me of Steve's chair on Blue's Clues.
Fencing22 March 2017, 7:45I doubt that's called fencing even in other countries. In the US it's generally called a barricade though.

But it's a solid representation.
Safe22 March 2017, 7:27Good detail and shading for a such a basic image.
Bathroom21 March 2017, 12:53Um, a clawfoot that's got a single shower curtain rod going through it? Not really the way it usually works.
Magnetic field21 March 2017, 11:38Very cool. Reminds me of doing the iron fillings bits in grade school.
Workplace21 March 2017, 10:48I suspect it's supposed to be a drafting desk, but that might just be an effect of the angle.
Brain21 March 2017, 10:32That's a great image. Excellent detail. It reminds me of the yarn version I've seen. :)
Plane20 March 2017, 1:32I can't figure out how, even when I'll start in different spots depending on how the puzzle lays out, if there's a bird that consists of

XX XX
X

It's always the last part I'm filling in.
Rose18 March 2017, 12:16You know Christiana, on occasion I add a comment to a puzzle just so I can go back and see if anyone replied to the more verbose or snarky comments already there, via the links in my profile. :)

I also am regularly torn by the inclination to regurgitate those same two points. They really should add them to the FAQ page - as well as a note on how you will often counter Russian language and cultural references in these images.
Gardener18 March 2017, 12:04A Cybmerman with an electrocution device.

But on a slightly more serious note - why do so many of the male-esque people in these puzzles end up looking like LEGO figures?
Victory Day (9 May)18 March 2017, 9:41It's not MAA, it's MAЯ, which is Russian for May (genitive case). The last letter is the Cyrillic letter Ya.

I think the people thinking this is Sputnik are confused by the Ya too, because Sputnik was launched on March 9 - not May 9.

I'm assuming the structure with the spire that looks vaguely rocket-like is Spasskaya Tower in Moscow. If you look at the Wikipedia page for Victory Day you'll see an image of the tower during a May 9th celebration.
Keyboard17 March 2017, 4:55Seriously can't decide if it's USB or PS/2. :)
On the beach17 March 2017, 4:24Okay... questions: Why are her eyes slits in 2 different directions? Why is her mouth lopsided like Sylvester Stallone's? What's with the crazy banshee hair sticking out in all directions? Is she actually wearing a bikini? Because her supposed bikini bottoms don't actually go all the way around her hip to connect to whatever is in the back. I acknowledge the shading on her top could be a bikini - since there are no visible nipples - but if it's meant to be a bikini top they went out of their way to give her long pendulous breasts so she has plenty of cleavage above said top.

And is the rest of her left arm buried in the sand?

FTR - I'm not bothered that she kind of looks naked - I find it very refreshing to see something this unusual instead of another machine gun or helicopter. I'm just vexed by the strange and varied oddities in how this entire image was put together - ESPECIALLY her eyes and mouth being all tilted.

It looks like Latrine, from Robin Hood: Men in Tights, sunbathing. :)
Brontosaurus16 March 2017, 11:30Me too "Tim" - that one day, they'll find a brontosaurus on Pluto and the irony of it all will make creationists' heads explode.
Mushrooms15 March 2017, 15:33Not necessarily David. Mushrooms grow on things; tree stumps, patches of grass or moss, anthills or piles manure. It's not at all unusual to find a group of mushrooms all growing in a mound this way.
Winnie-the-Pooh13 March 2017, 15:31LOL, well pointed out Christiana.
Cat13 March 2017, 14:10Are it legs made out of hedge clippers?
Hare13 March 2017, 5:25Looks like Frank from Donnie Darko - which makes it even more disturbing to look at.
Bear12 March 2017, 12:56Looks more like a lion cub than a bear.
Woman12 March 2017, 11:52Funny I just made a comparison between another image and a LEGO figurine, and this definitely has a hairless LEGO head.
Dog12 March 2017, 11:20Uh no, that is definitely not Blue. For starters, she has a nose, and her ears look nothing like that.

In fact if you wanna go with a kid's show character, I imagine this is what a baby Mim-Mim might've looked like, if he wasn't a biped at first.

But I think even Happy Bunny would look at this thing and go, "WTF?"
Dolphin12 March 2017, 11:02This isn't even mixing animals, it's a weird fake one. The body shape and thinness does resemble more of a bottlenose dolphin than an orca. But neither of those animals has a set of bottom fins or a break in their top fin. And the head looks nothing like a bottlenose dolphin.

FTR - Orcas actually are members of the dolphin family. So it's important to specify that you're talking about comparing it to a bottlenose dolphin - the type of dolphin most of us associate with the word. Because technically an orca is a dolphin.

But more to the point, if anything this picture looks more like a catfish than any ocean dwelling mammals.
Elephant12 March 2017, 10:29If you look at a photograph of any elephant, the hip contours are almost always clearly defined. And depending on the lighting, there can be a pretty distinctive shadow along that area.

Now there really should be the same definition line/shading along the shoulder area as well, if they were trying to get an elephant image with a little more realistic definition, but that the shading exists on the hind leg is pretty easily explainable.

You might as well question why LEGO figurine has ab or cleavage lines.
Flag12 March 2017, 10:13Have to agree with David. Even as simple puzzles go, this is way too simplistic.
Gangster12 March 2017, 8:08That dude has a very strange head.
A month9 March 2017, 10:31They're also connected in English etymology, as well as Saxon, Germanic, Greek, Dutch, Norse, etc.; the list literally goes on and on. In many ancient languages the words for month and moon were nearly interchangeable - and in most current languages, the words for moon and month also start with M. You gotta figure that in just about every early culture months were tracked via lunar cycles, so it makes a lot of sense that the words are related in many languages, and that the moon would've been a common topic shared among different cultures.
The hippopotamus who was afraid of vaccinations9 March 2017, 7:59Google it Jay - it's an old kid's cartoon in Russia.
Still life9 March 2017, 7:30I'm not an art expert by any means, but I think that most still life paintings that were of the impressionists' style were outdoors scenes - the play of the light and nature being an integral part of the style.

I also suspect there's a table or shelf behind the curtain with a quill sticking up on it.
Boat7 March 2017, 21:28A hamster, with long hair, in a remote control speedboat? Best I got.
Scottish Terrier7 March 2017, 1:15Looks like K-9 wearing a ghost costume.
Kiss6 March 2017, 10:58It looks like something quite creepy rather than cute - like two distorted small children melting into each other.
Pacific6 March 2017, 10:02Pacific, "tending to make peace," from the Middle French pacifique and the Latin pacificus - i.e. pacifism. Not only was the symbol part of the CND, when it really took off it wasn't just a "Peace Sign," it was specifically a symbol for the pacifist movement. It's not vague at all, it's a spot on title.

Also it would be good if more people took a moment to remember that this is NOT an English-language-first website. Sure, we all know there are titles which are just plain wrong or the English translation is a little wonky, but when it's the latter it doesn't do to complain it's the former. And in this case, I'd say it's technically a more accurate title than the title we'd all think of first.

Also I'm with you Palouday - I prefer a variety in difficulties, and am happy to have a simple and easily identifiable puzzle in the middle of more challenging ones.
Man raising a flag4 March 2017, 11:56Actually it looks more like Johnny Five putting up a flag.
Skull4 March 2017, 9:41Jaylee James - Not bloody likely. That's one creepy configuration.
Africa2 March 2017, 10:48I think they were going for some kind of pictographic interpretation of African masks, but yeah, just naming this image Africa is in bad taste.
