Monarch butterfly29 January 2024, 14:58Since this site doesn't have any tools for allowing users to adjust the contrast, as a puzzle creator you have to ensure there's enough contrast between colours. Even if the end result is less pretty.

At first I felt the colours were separated enough so I started doing it. But it quickly became apparent that the orange and red are hard to distinguish. Making the puzzle more about squinting at colours than solving the puzzle.

In this case, making the orange a midrange yellow would separate it both from the white background of the site and the red. The brown could be made black to give more contrast in the darker colours.

There's websites that can give guidance on how much contrast there should be between colours to make a site easy to read, you can use one of those to check that the contrast is high enough if it's difficult for you to tell.

Pretty result, but annoying puzzle due to the contrast.
Octopus10 November 2023, 18:40Superb puzzle, great fun to solve.
And the picture is great in the end as well!

It's really nice with some really difficult ones with a, relatively speaking, smaller size.
Tiny Monarch23 October 2023, 11:05I figured it'd be too easy from the symmetry so I went colour by colour. Adds a bit more of a puzzle to it when you have to figure out which colour to start with.

I'm sure you already know of that method to add some difficulty, but someone else might not.
Corgi14 September 2023, 3:33This one was a nice challenge to go colour by colour on. You have to either have a good memory or (as I did) mark the empties though.

No guessing required at all.
Dog19 October 2021, 17:18Had some fun solving it nearly entirely by color, 452631. Only had 2 squares of color 3 left to fill when I needed to swap to 1 to find which of the two pairs was the correct one.
Fire13 September 2020, 22:27But why would someone set fire to a teddy-bear?!
Bubble O' Bill31 July 2020, 23:46https://lmgtfy.com/?q=Bubble+O%27+Bill&s=d
Santa29 July 2020, 2:47Undead Santa?
The eleventh doctor20 July 2020, 13:51Solved color by color, very easy. It's more of a picture than a puzzle really.

Light Gray -> Red -> Brown -> Peach -> Charcoal gray -> Beige -> Black
Though you can do any color first, probably even black though that might be a bit too much of a headache.
Noodles17 July 2020, 15:16Not Poodles.
Cockerel5 July 2020, 20:55It's #dee8ee, that's 90.2% white, and much too little contrast to be a safe choice for contrast:

https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/?fcolor=DEE8EE&bcolor=FFFFFF
Blueberries30 June 2020, 21:32As pretty as the picture is, the puzzle is essentially: Copy the colors in order until filled in...
Pickaxe30 June 2020, 17:24Way to many colors to make a good puzzle, and the colors aren't even that descriptive for wood
Fox27 June 2020, 6:29Very nice motif, excellent!
Fancy man on horse!19 June 2020, 2:46Clearly it's a broken beer bottle.
The girl in the cap18 June 2020, 1:08Very well done
Roll17 June 2020, 4:26For a bit there I was quite concerned what had happened to that poor pecan...
Blue Pearl16 June 2020, 3:25Beautiful, but tedious with all the 1's, not too hard despite that.
Large bouquet12 June 2020, 14:40Very clever use of negative space, and it makes it a more interesting puzzle to solve as well
Meeting or parting31 May 2020, 19:55There's not a singular purpose for a yellow ribbon, they are used for everything to protest the planned destruction of a park, to signify their son is at war, to raise awareness of suicide, to remember a sunken ship, to signal support for hostages, to signal solidarity with the armed forces, pro-democracy, victims of a riot, supporting prisoners of war, as a backing to medal of honor, press freedom, to support a leader in exile, to support ex-convicts...

The list is long and varied (and that's just what's on wikipedia), so I can't help but wonder why they would make it perfect?
Mappy (Video Game)30 October 2018, 14:01Just copying a sprite from a game doesn't make a great puzzle, in this case you could have merged colors 2+9, 6+8 and removed 7 to make for a more interesting puzzle
Owl22 October 2018, 15:09It depends on eyes, screen, disability, lighting, and probably more.
Just because you can see the difference doesn't invalidate that the colors *are* way to similar.
I had to scoot over so the light hit my screen differently and swap between them to see the difference.
And more importantly, the puzzle gets easier if you split it into too many shades, in this case the picture would look just about identical with just color #4 (black)
Zebra17 September 2018, 4:46Excellent use of negative space
Dog17 September 2018, 4:32Very nice, good shading and not too much of a column/row being fully described at the start
Amanita14 September 2018, 20:31Very nice and easy, great use of negative space.
Generally I prefer harder ones but it wasn't too simple
Pigeon13 September 2018, 20:09I thought so at first too, but if you google the name of the puzzle you will see plenty of images showing off just these colors.
Pigeon13 September 2018, 20:07I think this is a good point for why contrast is important, there weren't any blues in the colors if you ask me (magenta and mint green).

Was a nice picture in the end though (and luckily I had no issue with these particular colors).
Blueberry12 September 2018, 23:00The two greens don't have enough contrast between them, try darkening the darker version and changing the hue of the brighter one towards yellow a bit. Other than that quite the good puzzle making decent use of negative space inside the picture.
Seal11 September 2018, 17:07Too many shades of brown, and the end result doesn't benefit much from the extra shades either.
Octopus29 August 2018, 20:48Bit more contrast would be appreciated, for instance red shifting the medium purple colour a bit and blue shifting the brightest one.

But other than that it was excellent, well done.
I. Can. Fly!9 July 2018, 22:39I think it's meant to be Orange with a yellow-orange beak, but yes mouth line and nostril. The eye is formed by the negative space in the black
Happy Toast9 July 2018, 22:08Very quick, super simple with both symmetry and not using white space inside the figure, cute though ^^
Ghost cat9 July 2018, 21:32Clearly not a
ghost-cat, but a pen-cat
Ghost cat9 July 2018, 21:31Contrast between colors is so important to make a puzzle fun rather than infuriating to solve. Luckily I could see the difference but I agree with you in principle.
Cockerel17 May 2018, 22:29It's great, except the color choice, the off white is painful to work with with a white background. In this case, consider that
chickens
come in other colors than white. Or try to frame the subject with a background so the empty spaces form the white color.

Other than that, cute and fun
Footprints16 April 2018, 22:18Well done, the lack of fully described rows and columns make it a lot more interesting to solve, if possible though avoid
duplicating two shapes
as it makes it less interesting once you figured out
the first one
.
Pipe14 April 2018, 21:50That's no
pipe
Spelunky13 April 2018, 23:16"---others prefer large sections of one colour."

Your implying that others want it easier, when in fact what at least some of us want is a harder puzzle, this one was dead easy, the only thing masquerading that fact was that there are many colors
Madeline13 April 2018, 23:01Simply using sprites from games make for terrible puzzles, the rows could have had all but the black colors filled in with question marks and it would *still* be solvable.
Hat9 April 2018, 18:29Its only 5pm here so after a brief ponder I saw what it was, the
green stitching
threw me off a bit at first but all in all its very well made, and a great puzzle.

It's a great example of how nice you can make the picture with just a few colors, and it makes the puzzle all the more enjoyable to solve when the colors are contrasting with each other.
Kirby9 April 2018, 12:45Straight up using
game sprites
make for poor puzzling, or rather, very easy puzzling.
Cheese Board8 April 2018, 22:21Very good one, thanks
A Line in the Sand8 April 2018, 20:19You probably already know, but you can create a custom css (style sheet) for most browsers, you can force the background to be black and text white there. I don't know if that would be enough for you (along with using dark themes) but I thought I'd mention it since it's not a feature most people know about or use.
Snowman28 March 2018, 22:15Color 2 and 4 are nearly identical to the background, use more contrast or reduce the number of colors
Rose27 March 2018, 22:00Way too little contrast between the shades, its a puzzle foremost, making it tedious to solve just so the finished picture can look a tiny bit prettier isn't right.
Lemon27 March 2018, 14:03Very good and challenging puzzle
Cactus26 March 2018, 19:14It's very easy to solve, but kudos on the colors, even with 4 greens you managed to get them sufficiently contrasting that it was possible to differentiate them.
You can solve the whole thing by only using the rows and then narrowing the fields by crossing out the outermost rows. Row 8-10, 12-14 describe the whole row, then column 1 and 14 are filled in, rinse and repeat.
Pot13 January 2018, 0:31Picking an off white color is not a very good idea, made it tedious to fill in
Bonsai12 December 2017, 20:45The highlight of the pot doesn't line up with the shadow of the pot, other than that well done.
Christmastree8 December 2017, 17:32Go from bottom to top and it's not even a puzzle, just a color by numbers.
