Might be worth explaining (to our younger players!) that Laika was the first animal to orbit the Earth in a spaceship (Sputnik 2). She was a stray from the streets of Moscow. Some see her as a (literal) underdog becoming hero, others as an abuse of animal rights.

She was launched into space on the day I was born. My sole claim to fame! She's been a kind of mascot for me my whole life, and that has led to a lifelong love of rescued dogs, often very old ones which I know are on their last journey. I love to give them a loving home, to make their lives as pleasant as possible for their predicted last months; often with the result that an apparently dying dog suddenly gets a new lease on life and spends several more years with us!

I should perhaps add that I'm now too old and disabled myself to manage dogs, but I have a couple of disabled ex-feral cats who are very happy and contented house cats.
