Had me puzzled till almost the end! Mind you, I've never understood why a snake is part of the symbol for medicine . . .
replyIt's a leech, not a snake. They used to remove leeches by stabbing them and twisting around the needle. The symbol is a leech coiled around the needle.
replyUh no Sean, there's no needle or leech in these symbols. The Rod of Asclepius is a snake wrapped around a staff, and the Bowl of Hygieia is a snake twined around a chalice. They are all based on Greek mythology and deities involved in health and healing. Google Asclepius and Hygieia and you'll get more details on why the symbols include snaes, plus you'll come across mentions of the Hippocratic oath since it references both deities.

From flamingo, to cocktail glass to this! Love it when you get false ideas as it progresses!
Cool picture. I thought there were supposed to be wings with the medicine symbol, but I see that a Chalice is good too. Thanks!
replyThe Bible tells the story of the Jews in the wilderness. God sent snakes among the people because of their rebellion. Then He told Moses to create a bronze snake and put it on a pole. If anyone was bitten by a snake, they could look up at the bronze snake and live. Many relate this to Jesus becoming sin for us and being crucified on a stake in our place. When we look to him, we can live.
