My guess is looking at a corner or side space and determining whether having it filled is possible considering the implications for the next row/column. For example, in this puzzle, it is impossible for the upper left corner to be filled. If it were to be filled, because the top row is a 3, the next row would also fill in the first 3 boxes (because the first number in 3 first vertical numbers are 3, 2, and 2). This cannot be the case, though, because the 2nd row has a 2 for the first number, not 3 or greater. Therefore, the upper left corner is an "x". You can apply the rule to continue working a few squares to the right. You can also use this to march right down and quickly solve the first column after working on the lower right a bit.
