With Epiphany less than a week away, I thought it was one of the Three Kings.

You know, I am actually not one of those secularists who believes all mainstream religion needs to just cease eventually. But I do look forward to the day when our diversity of beliefs reaches a level that they all stop assuming that the general population is aware of their holidays, hymns, prayers and scriptures. That will be a lovely era.

And I know that sounds snarky, but it's a genuine hope for the future. It's one thing for me to know who the "three kings" are - I did take comparative religion, twice (long story) - but there's just no rational reason for me to know what the Feast of the Epiphany is, when I've never been a member (however briefly) of any Abrahamic tradition.

I wouldn't expect you to know. I'm not suggesting that you should have had the same thoughts I did. But I *am* aware of the date, and to *my* mind that solution seemed likely. There's a difference between "I thought" and "everyone should have thought".

And I've noticed that when some figure from Russian culture that so many of us never heard of, you always welcome the opportunity for broadening your horizons instead of complaining there's no reason for you to know. Sorry if I'm getting a little ad hominem, but you seemed to be attributing to me attitudes which are not mine, and it's made me a little tetchy.

Your word choice made me smile; you were being "tetchy" in much the same way I was.

To my mind, saying "Epiphany" and "Three Kings" as you did implied most would recognize the references. If I'm referencing something many people won't recognize, I try to explain it, include a picture, etc. so my comment makes sense to those who read it - without Googling.

Though I also may have given the impression that this attitude is something most Abrahamic believers take on deliberately rather than it being a product of our society - and my apologies for that. When Clooney's film "Three Kings" came out, I would've been surprised if most people needed the title reference explained to them. Just like I'd be surprised if most people don't at least know who Zeus or Anubis are. Certainly ancient mythologies are so pervasive in our culture that most of us recognize them, and that's certainly not limited to Abrahamic belief systems. But there is a level of detail in the latter that pervades more, especially in the US. [1/2]

Where I'm from, 'presumption of Abrahamic universalism' exists for a reason. Attempts to scale it back are met with complaints like "They're declaring War on Christmas!" I was never given a choice to know so much about Abrahamic belief systems, none of us were.

How I feel about that is very similar to global frustration at assumptions that American cultural references are universal. And that attitude leads to the complaints on THIS site, about puzzles based on Russian or Ukrainian culture which Americans might not recognize. It's an ethnocentrism we ALL find ways to overcome - I do it by learning about cultures that I wasn't force-fed.

But I'm sorry I didn't make clearer that I was talking about a societal behavior that annoys me, not saying you were annoying me. I swear, when I try to skip a single point for brevity, it's the one point that makes it look like I'm sniping. And even if I think your comparison is faulty, I certainly didn't take it as ad hominem or you sniping willy nilly yourself. :) [2/2]
