If you search "Russian monks" and look at the images, you'll see this is simply how those monks dress (they probably need the hats to keep warm)!! Because of the split between Eastern and Western Christianity, the Russian Orthodox church was a *target* of a crusade from the West--which foundered in the cold.

replyI was going to comment that it was possible to do this one without any crosses, but then I realized that that wouldn’t be true. But it’s still possible to do it without any x's.
