Just curiou: Has anyone managed to solve this by sheer thinking ahead -- without a bit of trial and error? (That is, setting a square to black or to X, and work through the puzzle for a bit to see if leads to an impossible situation.) I'm doing quite a bit of this guesswork, but the puzzles on this site are not supposed to require it.

Very difficult to start, but once the first blocks are set it goes pretty smoothly.
