Entirely likely. It was really only a few decades after these were invented that the more modern turn-handle style of can opener came along. And that was patented within a couple of years of the electric can opener. I doubt anyone hovered over those sickle-style for long, given how much more dangerous an item they would be for a kid to find in the kitchen drawer.
