The US didn't join until Pearl Harbor (Dec. 7, 1941), so to many American's minds (I am embarrassed to say) that's when the war started.

Here it's more that Russians don't count their invasion / occupation of Eastern Europe in 39 & 40 as part of the war, and their war with the Finns as a completely separate "situation". In their mind WW2 started only in 41 when Germany invaded them, hence the 41-45

Russia only switched parts of the war in 1941. Russia joined the war in 1939 as a result of Ribbentrop-Molotov agreement (Hitler-Stalin friendship).

I agree with you and it leaves me shocked and profoundly saddened to read up on it. I’m shocked that having grown up in “the west”, I knew so little about this aspect of WWII. and I’m saddened to be reminded of the evil and brutality that we are capable of. Please read up on the battle on the eastern front aspect of WWII. This is much too important to be tucked away in spoiler alert. Thank you.
