The funny thing is that they were named for the penny and the farthing, because of the two sizes of wheels. But they weren't really even called penny-farthings in their day. They were just called bicycles. As they were becoming obsolete we needed a term to differentiate between these and normal modern bikes with two equal-sized wheels.
