It took me a while. I blame it on recently having read some Rick Riordan, where the demigods generally have dyslexia and people communicate courtesy of the goddess Iris.

The thing about authors writing for YA readers is that their audience--unlike sophisticated adults of discerning literary taste--won't put up with a book hiding its lack of a story in a lot of BS verbiage meant to intimidate. Actually, come to think of it, this is also true of most genre fiction--mystery, science fiction, fantasy. Give us a plot or go away. So I'm with your grandson.
