You got me Googling. :)
I found some things called crown cakes that are kind like (what I'd call) a bundt cake, but without the ridges. (looks scrumptious https://baketotheroots.de/frankfurt-crown-cake-aka-frankfurter-kranz/ )
But the only sign I could find of (what I'd call) cupcakes being called crown cakes is if they had a literal crown fashioned on top, out of frosting or other stuff. Mind sharing details on from where you learned to call them that?
Side note: WIC should become an online abbreviation for "What I'd call..." :)
