This theme crops up on a regular basis, and when it does, it is usually an obnoxious slog of single pixels and single spaces to give the appearance of texture. GUMPERT goes in a different direction, giving his subject a unique appearance. While the resulting image is likely to be polarizing... oh, who am I kidding? I'm the only one who will think this, but I find the image both convoluted and ugly. That said, the puzzle was very satisfying to solve, and I applaud the constructor's effort to do something interesting to an otherwise boring subject. This is a case where the ends are less important than the means. I didn't love the image, but I thoroughly enjoyed the puzzle.

AArgh , all that brain ache for a ... !

This crossword was PERFECT for my skill level, I had to really stop and think about the next square. But I wasn't stuck on anything for too long, really fun to solve! However, the end pictures should have more of a scale kind of texture (like the real thing does) than those really random ones, it comes off to me as kind of ugly and messy. But the enjoyment definitively topped the picture!
