Where I come from, "washer" is used to mean a washing machine.
Right now on Google "washer and dryer" gets about four times as many hits as "washing machine and dryer". (And "washing machine and drying machine" gets 52 hits.)

It's both of things. English - you've got to love it.
Depends on the context. Thankfully with a puzzle we get all the context we need. Now if one was building furniture from IKEA and someone handed you this ^^ instead of a small metal disk... you're going to have a very strange bookshelf.
