I once nearly did this - having nowhere to put a spent (but still very hot) match I put it back into the matchbox. The box then went into a front pocket of my jeans.
I heard the whoosh before I felt the warmth.
Instinct kicked in (luckily) & my hand - without any instruction from brain - whipped the box out of pocket & threw it to the ground - smoke was pouring out of each end & the cardboard charred.
I thanked my hand for saving the day & much, much more!
