BTW, how do you rate ones that you can do with no Xs? I always rate them very simple and am wondering if that is fair to the artist.

The puzzles are designed to be done with Xs so the degree of difficulty should be based on Xs. If you wish to challenge yourself by not using them then that is up to you.
