When that happens, I first try to come back and wait for the notice that says the puzzle has been complteted. When that also does not work, i press the „Mark crossword as solved“ button. Good luck.

OK that's what had confused me as I was looking for it on a puzzle which I had already solved (but which the site showed as not yet solved)
