So I guess that the opposite of without excess is excessively? I successfully managed this puzzle without excess. Sometimes I have to do harder puzzles effectively inexcessively, with judicious use of excess. But for e.g., larger Tverianka puzzles I have to do exclusively excessively, also known as INXS for short.
