As a proud Hungarian compatriot of the subject, I'd like to add his name is written with an "S": "Semmelweis". He is known as "the saviour of mothers" because of his simple yet very important discovery that proper hygienic measures go a long way toward preventing dreaded and often fatal postpartum infections.
