The sword in the rock is not Excalibur. Excalibur was a gift from the evil lady in the lake.

There are many conflicting versions of the stories. In some, Excalibur was the Sword in the Stone. In others, the Sword in the Stone was replaced by Excalibur. In still others, it was repaired to become Excalibur.

There's also the question of what the "stone" was - bronze swords were cast using stone moulds, and it was a test of a crafter's skill and knowledge to be able to extract a useful sword from a stone mould.

Some traditions have the Sword stuck into an anvil - representing the blacksmith's forged iron blades
