Yes, it depends if it is crescent or decrecent. And the hemisphere also. In this case,it's crescent for the north hemisphere, and crescent for us in the south.

I don't know the word "waxing". Sorry, my mother language is spanish.

Here in the US (and in my experience), people who use waxing and waning are (a) astronomers, or (b) being snooty, or (c) being humorous. The rest of us schlubs usually just say "it's getting bigger". Or, of course, smaller as the case may be. Growing/shrinking is also an acceptable pairing.
