In Britain the size & number of seeds in a fruit determines the name.
Apples, pears, oranges & the like have a fair number of small seeds - these are pips.
Peaches & plums have one large seed - a stone.
Some radio stations mark the exact time on some hours with 6 pips. These are 5 short and 1 longer pip (high pitched beeps) with 1 second between them.
The pips start at 5 seconds to say 6pm - which means that the final long pip marks 6pm precisely so that you can set your watch.
