I think this is the best rendition of the subject I’ve seen in this site. That said, I utterly deplore the use of this subject in the site at all. I respect guns, I think they are unfortunately necessary, in the hands of legal authorities.
But they remind me, first of all, of the sadness they are associated with.
And the subject trigger a sad flow of comments. Of course, making comments is a right guns haters and lovers both enjoy. However, the comment style are usually very distinct. Gun haters just write about their discontent, whereas gun lovers are very often aggressive, to the point of giving names to the gun haters.

Sadness is correct. My good friend's son was murdered with a gun. Too many people's lives end this way. Like you, I don't think we need to get rid of guns, but I wish in the US there were much stricter requirements, licensing, and punishments. It's like we as a nation have decided that since there is no way to end ALL gun violence, we should simply give up instead of finding a reasonable middle ground.

(Tbh, the agressiveness of gun lovers just makes me more convicted that there should exist extremely restrictive laws against their possession and use by non legal authorities.)
So I would like to ask all gun haters like myself, to write to the site asking for the subject to have a 18 plus flag. This way we would be (possibly) all happy, gun haters and lovers and everything in between.

I totally agree with all you say and have never understood why a cigarette gets 18+ and a gun doesn't.

Cigarettes, porn, and even LOTTERY TICKETS are illegal for 18-year-olds! It is astounding that kids have to be protected from boobs and scratch-offs, but pretty much anyone can have a gun.

It actually is federal law that you must be 21 to purchase a handgun and 18 to purchase a long gun from an FFL dealer. (Personally I think both should be 18, because if someone can vote and serve in the military they should get all the rights of any other citizen). Federal law also bans the sale of any handgun to anyone under the age of 18 in any circumstances (so including private sales).
There are very few limits on sale of most long guns (rifles, shotguns, etc.) in a private sale.
Many states have set higher age limits (especially on hand guns) that prevent anyone under 21 from purchasing them.

I think all of it should be set to 18. If you're enough of an adult to serve in the military and vote, you should be adult enough to legally do any activity that any other adult is permitted to do.
That said, 18 is also just an arbitrary age (as is 21), so I'm not fixated on that being the cutoff; just that if you are considered an adult you should be considered an adult, not "Well, you're legally an adult now with all the rights and responsibilities that come with it... but... we're not gonna let you drink, smoke (some states), own a hand gun, own a rifle (some states), smoke or vape (some states), go to the casino (many states), get married without your parents' permission (2 states)... now get out there and die for your country (but vote for me first)!"
