It's Kuprin's story "Elephant". There, in the story the girl was ill strange disease, she did not want to, or eat, or play, was fading with each passing day. But once she wanted an elephant, and not a toy, but a living one. Elephant led to her late at night, so as not to attract the attention of onlookers. Then, after spending the whole day with the elephant, she went on the mend.
