Doesn't this go against the rule that different color groups must not have any unpainted square between them?
e.g. between the green and grey on the bottom, or the yellow and other colors in the middle

There is no such rules. Empty space can be anywhere between or around colors. If not, it would be less interesting to solve, I suppose :)

Very true, Alyaa. Exactly for that reason I included lots of white spots in www.nonograms.org/nonograms2/i/27308 and similar puzzles.
