fish on Friday - that's a Catholic custom. and beer on Friday is a more generic custom ;-)

Abstinence from meat is still required for Catholics **unless the faithful substitute another penance**, which can be done during non-Lenten Fridays. (1983 Code of Canon Law)
replyI just looked up Russian Orthodox rules on fasting and apparently adults in good health are supposed to avoid meat AND fish on Fridays (and also Wednesdays). So I don't get this.
