An unusual subject! A nice change of pace, thanks!
I solved with a custom color palette so I had no idea what this was until the puzzle title popped up.

Thinking about puzzle design (not aesthetics), some things would have made the puzzle more challenging:
1. Internal whitespace within the shapes. Once the outlines have been established, there's not much challenge. The straight-diagonal checkerboard shape in particular was a less interesting to me...it could have been much shorter and still conveyed the same amount of challenge.
2. The dark outlines around each of the shapes made it a bit too easy to group sets of clues together. Not having the outlines may have made the overall puzzle more challenging. Or, if the shapes overlapped, that may also have made it tougher to solve.
3. Having a simple background motif might have made it more challenging. For example, a hollow rectangle or a hollow circle that connects all the shapes but also contains whitespace that the solver must deal with.
Just some constructive thoughts. This was fun to solve as-is.
