Right click for that. Also if you want to disable the auto-crossout you can do that by clicking on the cogwheel at the top-right side of the puzzle

As the others have said you can do this by right-clicking. You can further adapt the game by clicking the settings icon (the classic cogwheel) and change how you add a cross if you want.
Cogwheel -> Management -> Advanced settings
