Reminds me of a lesson I learned the hard way in a Paris pub. After a long walk on a hot summer day, we stopped for refreshments and in my best French, with what I thought was an appropriate gesture, I asked the waiter for « une grande bière froide » (maybe too much emphasis on the « grande »?). He served me what must have been a 2 litre pitcher! It was delicious and we laughed a lot but I recall it cost me about $70 :-)

My idea of a foreign language is British English. :D
replyAah yes Paris “service” - the waiter knew what you wanted but in typical Paris fashion gave you a ridiculously large serving. Similar to when I ordered a ‘glacé’ - waiter responded with ‘ah oui banana split’ - I responded - non no banana split - I was served a …banana split. I left the item to melt in the sun…when it had liquified I took it back inside / slammed it on the counter with resulting splatters and glared at the waiter and repeated “no banana split” - I left without paying! Paris breeds waiters differently to the rest of France - I have found excellent service outside Paris.
