I am guessing this is the American version of "checking the report card"?

Yes, that could be right. School diary makes me think of something else, a timetable of lessons or so.

As an American, I've never heard the phrase 'school diary,' but there's a lot of regional differences within the US. Maybe it's just not used in the Rockies where I am.

Hmmm... Are the light blue ones tears??? Looks like a child being hit???
Thats illegal in my part of the world, and I strongly believe this should be removed!

I do not believe the child is being hit, but IS in trouble for some reason because of what the parent has found in their records. I would hope that the author of this puzzle would comment so that we can know for sure what is shown.

I don't think he's being hit. I think the man is pointing his finger up saying "You have to study more!" And the child is crying because he's getting a telling off from his parent. As we all did at some point in our childhood, for a reason or an other x)
Nice puzzle, I like when it's telling a story :) Thank you IrenaZ!

I like it, and I too believe there is no hitting, just a stern lecture!
replyI think there is a great deal of overreaction about this puzzle in the comments. The term 'school diary' as a communication method between school and family or something similar to a school planner where a student can write in their assignments. The kid isn't getting hit. The kid is more likely being told they have to study rather than play.

I agree that the man is probably not hitting, just gesticulating. I don't think the picture shows an ideal way to get a child to do well. Maybe the artist is remembering a scene from their childhood. Hopefully they are not advocating for making kids cry. It isn't usually very helpful in the long run. Maybe we can get that man a copy of my favourite parenting book How to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk.
