There's not a singular purpose for a yellow ribbon, they are used for everything to protest the planned destruction of a park, to signify their son is at war, to raise awareness of suicide, to remember a sunken ship, to signal support for hostages, to signal solidarity with the armed forces, pro-democracy, victims of a riot, supporting prisoners of war, as a backing to medal of honor, press freedom, to support a leader in exile, to support ex-convicts...
The list is long and varied (and that's just what's on wikipedia), so I can't help but wonder why they would make it perfect?
